(WMUL-FM) – The long drought of Marshall Women’s Basketball (6-12) is over, as the Thundering Herd defeated the Georgia Southern Eagles (9-10) 67-60 in Huntington.

With its last win coming against Division II opponent Davis & Elkins on Dec. 21, it had been 32 days without a victory for Marshall. Furthermore, the last Division I win for the Herd was Dec. 13, leaving an astounding 40 days without triumph against the top collegiate level.

“At some point you just can’t believe when it keeps happening,” Marshall head coach Juli Fulks said after the Herd’s loss in the previous matchup on Saturday, which brought the losing streak to a staggering seven. That painful losing streak is over as Aislynn Hayes led all scorers with 25 points and CC Mays tagged along with 17. This solidifies Marshall’s first Sun Belt Conference win of the year, bumping it to 1-7 in conference play.

“Well obviously I am really excited for our team to get that win and finally get that monkey off our back,” Fulks said after the victory against the Eagles, which marked her first career SBC win.

The game was consistently close, with Marshall hanging around but trailing at the end of each of the first three quarters.

The Thundering Herd came out quickly to start the fourth quarter, going on a 7-0 run to take a 55-50 lead, with all the points in the run coming from the hands of Hayes and Mays. The Eagles would fight back to make it a one-point deficit 56-55, but a three-pointer by Blessing King and a jumper from Hayes got Marshall up 61-55.

Georgia Southern managed to get within three, but the Thundering Herd took care of the ball and shot 4/6 from the line down the stretch. This consistent finish closed out the game and let Marshall taste victory for the first time in 2025.

Marshall’s defense creating offense was the name of the game for the Herd, as it accumulated 13 steals to Georgia Southern’s 9, as well as Marshall having a staggering 24 points off turnovers compared to the Eagles’ 10.

Marshall can sulk in the feeling of victory for a few days but will be back in action Sunday as it hosts Southern Miss at the Cam Henderson Center. Southern Miss is currently 6-12 overall and 2-5 in the Sun Belt Conference. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Marshall Women’s Basketball Recap By Shane Darling, FM88 Sports Jan. 23, 2025 HUNTINGTON, W Va.
