(WMUL-FM) \u2014 <\/span><span style=\"\">Being a college student comes with its own struggles, but Marshall University gives students the resources they need to control and talk about their mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">The Marshall University Counseling Center, located on the first floor of Prichard Hall, gives students the opportunity to discuss their mental health. \u201cThe Counseling Center offers professional therapeutic services that can assist students with mental health, academic, career and personal needs,\u201d the Counseling Center website said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">With the help of mental health specialists, the center helps students navigate college and the stresses of it as they prepare to take on the real world after they graduate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">\u201cWe recognize that the college years are a time of accelerated growth, significant challenges and considerable stress,\u201d the website says. \u201cWe are here to help you learn how to manage the variety of concerns that may arise during your college career.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Marshall also offers many different therapy groups to help manage stress during the semester.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Therapy groups like Write it Out (a journaling group that helps to organize feelings in writing) and With Flying Colors (an art therapy group that helps to reduce stress) can help students with stress while also being social with other students who might be feeling the same as them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Marshall student Kelsey Maynard, a social work major, has used these resources and said, \u201cThey have been a big help to me in managing my mental health in the past.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Maynard said being on campus both helps and hurts her mental health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">\u201cMy mental health definitely takes a hit while living on campus because I\u2019m so far away from my family,\u201d she said. \u201cIt also helps it because I have to stress less about bills and money.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">When asked about why mental health is important while being a student on campus, she spoke about how mental health can correlate with physical health. \u201cIt takes a lot of effort to get up every day and manage your stress and if you aren\u2019t properly taking care of your mental health, then your physical health could take a hit too,\u201d Maynard said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">Maynard said that mental health is very important to her and that she will always advocate for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"\">\u201cI\u2019ve struggled with depression and anxiety and I\u2019m grateful that I\u2019ve had the resources to seek help,\u201d she said. \u201cSome people aren\u2019t so lucky.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jordan Ooten March 3, 2025 HUNTINGTON, W.Va.
