\nHUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) \u2014With midseason approaching and every series beginning to carry postseason weight, the Marshall Thundering Herd is set to host the red-hot Appalachian State Mountaineers in what\u2019s shaping up to be a defining weekend in the Sun Belt baseball landscape.<\/p>\n
Marshall (17-16, 5-7 SBC) returns home to Jack Cook Field this Friday with something to prove. After a series of gritty, back-and-forth battles, the Herd is looking to turn competitive energy into consistent execution. Offensively, the senior duo of third baseman Eddie Leon and outfielder Ethan Murdoch have been the anchors, with Leon leading the team in average and Murdoch leading in long balls. Meanwhile on the bump, sophomore sensation Griffen Miller continues to show maturity in just his second season, leading the team in ERA, Wins, and Strikeouts.<\/p>\n
But standing in the Herd\u2019s path is a surging Appalachian State squad (17-15, 7-5 SBC), fresh off a dominant series win over ULM and a close win against Western Carolin. The Mountaineers are riding the momentum of sophomore slugger Tyler Figueroa, who launched a grand slam last weekend and is quickly becoming one of the most dangerous bats in the league.<\/p>\n
App. State plays with speed and swagger, pressing defenses with aggressive base running and timely hitting, exactly the kind of opponent that can punish mistakes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the kind of series that tests your identity,\u201d said Marshall head coach Greg Beals. \u201cWe\u2019ve had flashes of who we can be, but this weekend is about putting it all together. Pitching, defense, and timely hits, that\u2019s the formula.\u201d<\/p>\n
The matchups will be electric. Marshall\u2019s infield, headlined by a solid defensive glove Maika Niu at shortstop, will have its hands full containing App. State\u2019s hit-and-run tactics. Meanwhile, the Herd\u2019s bullpen, which has seen a steady rise in performance since early April, must hold strong against late-game pressure, something that has plagued the team in close losses.<\/p>\n
Marshall needs a series win to stay afloat in the crowded Sun Belt Conference standings and keep postseason hopes alive. For App. State, it\u2019s a chance to solidify its position near the top of the conference and send a message to the rest of the league.<\/p>\n
