\nHUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) \u2014 Hundreds of handcrafted bowls and a mission to fight hunger brings Huntington and Marshall’s communities together for this year’s Empty Bowls Fundraiser, scheduled for May 2 from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. at the Pullman Square Gazebo in downtown Huntington.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Local potters, <\/span>students<\/span> and volunteers have spent months creating unique ceramic bowls, each symbolizing the empty plates of those in need, with a bigger impact than you may think.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“The <\/span>amount<\/span> of meals that the food bank could provide on one dollar was nine meals,” <\/span><\/span><\/span>Professor Frederick\u00a0<\/span>Bartolovitch<\/span> said. “<\/span>Each bowl being 20 dollars, it ends up being 180 meals per bowl.<\/span> Last year we raised over 15,000 dollars just <\/span>through <\/span>selling bowls.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

He explained that t<\/span>he empty bowls initiative is far from a small one-off <\/span>fundraiser as it’s <\/span><\/span>been a<\/span> national event<\/span> since <\/span>it was started in the <\/span>1990s by a high school art teacher<\/span> named John <\/span>Hartom<\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The event has resonated with <\/span>those who <\/span>participate<\/span>d<\/span> and has inspired generations of potters to affect change in their local communities<\/span> through events of their own or through the initiative. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Bartolovitch<\/span> believes such events are vital in raising awareness and affecting change in <\/span>a way even beyond the scope of Empty Bowls.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“I think <\/span>that<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s<\/span> so vital right now in this time where <\/span>there\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0issues in benefits with the SNAP program and <\/span>funding for the food bank,” he said. “The resources for these sorts of things are not as well funded as they were even just a couple <\/span>years<\/span> ago.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

With each bowl serving as a reminder of hunger in our community, Empty Bowls proves that a simple act of giving can make a lasting impact.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
