HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WMUL-FM) \u2014 The annual Marcos award show for student athletes took place on April 6.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The event is planned by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, or SAAC.<\/p>\n

“We fund it, we advertise for it, we do all the planning. <\/span>It’s<\/span> all within student athletes working together from different sports, <\/span>different backgrounds<\/span> to make one big event that everybody can enjoy,<\/span>\u201d Alex Woodrum, a senior on the cheerleading team said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Senior Women\u2019s Tennis player, Kylie Fisher’s role within SAAC is serving on the Marketing and Events committee.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“So for the Marketing and Events Team, we oversee all the events that go on throughout SAAC and also coordinate the events with everyone that is participating in SACC,<\/span><\/span>” Fisher said.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Specifically for The Marcos<\/span>, the Marketing and Events Committee has secured a venue, vendors, collaboratio<\/span>ns, and free swag for <\/span>attendees.<\/span><\/p>\n

Woodrum has another crucial role for The Marcos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/span>I’m<\/span> the head creative,<\/span> and <\/span>I\u2019m<\/span> editing, and <\/span>working on<\/span> all the videos for<\/span> The<\/span> Marcos<\/span>,” he said.<\/span> “I also <\/span>ge<\/span>t<\/span> t<\/span>o present an award with one<\/span> of my teammates<\/span>.<\/span> So,<\/span> we<\/span>‘re<\/span> g<\/span>oing to<\/span> be presenting an award together<\/span>. <\/span>I think <\/span>it<\/span>‘s<\/span> r<\/span>e<\/span>ally fun<\/span>,<\/span> and I also want to see<\/span> how my work that I edit and create<\/span>d<\/span> is viewed by the rest of the athletics department.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The SAAC<\/span>\u00a0itself is composed of 2-<\/span>4<\/span> athletes from each sport whose coaches feel like they are the best fit to <\/span>represent<\/span> both the voices of the student-athletes and the voices of the athletic <\/span>department.<\/span><\/p>\n

“T<\/span><\/span>he Marcos is our biggest event, but we have also <\/span>helped out<\/span> at the local dog shelter, and along with Habitat for Humanity,” Fisher said. <\/span>As a SAAC rep, we definitely are a voice of reason throughout our sport.<\/span> So, if <\/span>there’s<\/span> ever a problem in our sport, then we come to our advisors and our mentors in SAAC and find a solution.<\/span> S<\/span>AA<\/span>C truly is the voice of <\/span>Marshall A<\/span>thletics as a student athlete.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Due to this only being the 3<\/span><\/span>rd<\/span><\/span> established<\/span> year of SAAC at Marshall, the goal is for SAAC\u2019s impact on the university and community to only grow stronger in the seasons to come.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
