HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WMUL-FM) \u2014 <\/span>Marco is an important part of Marshall\u2019s identity, and the University recently had the opportunity to celebrate its beloved mascot.<\/p>\n

It was party time at The Memorial Student Center as Marshall University celebrated Marco\u2019s birthday last month. The big bison turned sixty.<\/p>\n

Marco was surrounded by students and faculty for the momentous occasion as they took photos and ate cake. Cathy Hinkle, Campus Activities Board president, said the event was a chance for the campus community to come together as a family.<\/p>\n

Hinkle said, \u201cIt\u2019s kind of a big deal, the big 6-0. It gives a sense of togetherness, like you are one of the herd.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hinkle and other students all agreed that Marco is more than a mascot. He\u2019s a representation of the University. Many students said they love Marco and what he stands for.<\/p>\n

One Marshall student said, \u201cHe is a great representation of what our community is. He represents the fun and the love we have. He just represents who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tre Hyre, a Student Government Association member, said the event gives students the opportunity to show their appreciation and support for a figure who is always there to support them.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarco is usually out celebrating us, whether it’s athletics or student organizations, and I think it\u2019s great that we\u2019re all coming together to celebrate him for his big birthday,\u201d Hyre said.<\/p>\n

For Buffy Six, Communications Coordinator for Student Affairs, Marco\u2019s birthday is an example of students\u2019 ability to enjoy their college years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just love seeing students still come together and do fun things. I know that college is hard, I still remember my college years,\u201d Six said.<\/p>\n

Through nods of the head and a stern stomp of the foot, Marco did confirm that he has no plans to retire. Even as he nears social security age, Marco shows no signs of slowing down.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
