\nHUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) \u2014 Marshall Women\u2019s Basketball\u2019s Peyton Ilderton was selected as a Kay Yow Servant Leader Award Winner. Ilderton said that she was blessed to be selected for such an honor.<\/p>\n

\u201cI took a lot of pride in it,\u201d Ilderton said. \u201cI think it\u2019s extremely humbling to even be nominated for that. So, to have received that, I was very happy when coach Juli (Fulks) saw me as somebody that could hold that honor and just to actually receive it, it was awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n

As one of 62 players selected across the nation for the award for the 2024-25 season, the senior and Logan, W. Va. native will have an official \u201cKay Yow Servant Leader\u201d patch on her jersey throughout the season. Ilderton said that it\u2019s amazing to be selected with some of the best in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s crazy to think about,\u201d Ilderton said. \u201cThere are some people out there that are big names that get to wear that patch on their chest. I think it\u2019s an honor to be a part of that group of girls, and I\u2019m super excited about it to be a part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The award is named after coach Kay Yow who had a 22-year, on-again, off-again battle with breast cancer.\u00a0 The award is presented to student athletes who best embody the characteristics of coach Yow. People with a servant\u2019s spirit and a commitment to selfless leadership both on and off the court. Ilderton said that the award gives her an extra edge for her every time she steps foot on the court.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt just gives me even motivation to go out there and play as hard as I can for those who have suffered through breast cancer,\u201d Ilderton said. \u201cI do want to play for them, and I personally know people that have (suffered from breast cancer). So, it means the world to me that I get to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ilderton hopes to use her platform to advocate for those who suffer from breast cancer and help promote research in the battle to cure breast cancer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
