Va. (WMUL-FM) — Tomorrow, the Marshall Thundering Herd aims to regain its winning ways against the NCAA Division II Salem Tigers at the Cam Henderson Center.

The Herd has lost back-to-back games to power five opponents, falling 51-57 to Indiana, and 77-44 to No. 23 Kentucky.

Despite the lopsided score, the Herd had many positives in the loss to the Wildcats, especially on the defensive side of the hardwood.

“I thought defensively, it’s the theme right now, we did a lot of really good things,” Juli Fulks, Marshall head women’s basketball coach, said. “We were plus-15 on steals. Defensively, we’re doing enough.”

The game against the Wildcats was one that the Herd brought the stampede early, trailing 9-6 after the first quarter and holding Kentucky to just 3-for-17 shooting. The Herd held the Wildcats to an overall shooting of 39.1% (25 for 64).

“I thought we had a lot of really good possessions and a lot of good coverages,” Fulks said. “I’m looking at coverages and whether we were doing the right thing. We had a couple of botched coverages we hadn’t had in a while, but that was because of their size. We’ll work on that.”

Salem is 0-2, following a 71-35 loss against Kutztown University. The Tigers are currently on a 21-game losing streak dating back to December 11, 2024, when the Tigers defeated Davis & Elkins 74-57.

The Tigers are led by first year head coach Corey Hines. Hines previously served as an assistant coach at Glenville State University for the past three seasons.

Prior to that, Hines was the head girls’ basketball coach of the Fairmont State High School Lady Polar Bears from 2010 to 2023. During his 13-year tenure, he built one of the top high school basketball programs in the state. Under his leadership, the Lady Polar Bears captured eight sectional championships, nine regional championships, and made nine trips to the WVSSAC State Tournament—finishing as state runner-up four times and winning state championships in 2017 and 2019.

His coaching excellence earned him numerous accolades, including Coach of the Year honors from the WVSACA, the National Federation of High School Coaches, and the Big 10 and NCAC Conferences.

The contest is a battle of defense against a team trying to find its footing.
