Va. (WMUL-FM) —Having a month between meets did not seem to impact the Marshall Track & Field Team at the Marshall Alumni Classic this weekend as the Thundering Herd picked up 18 individual victories, and a school-recording breaking performance.

Leading the way for the Thundering Herd was sophomore Wyatt Milhoan, breaking the school record in the Men’s Indoor 300 with a time of 34.40. Roberts said that Milhoan’s performance is credited to his strive to be the best.

“The real key is his work ethic,” Roberts said. “Like the work he puts in the workouts, how hard he runs. He always hits the times that he’s supposed to. But we always work a lot on technique and positions coming out of the block, making sure you’re pushing the proper way.”

The Thundering Herd came into the meet after breaking three school records at the Marshall Opener in December. Roberts said that the team’s success despite the hiatus was due the team’s urge to be championship contenders.

“I think some of that momentum carried over into the break and people were excited to see how those people were performing, and they wanted to be part of it,” Roberts said. It always helps when you have people doing big things because it just brings the whole group up.”

Roberts said that the team’s depth is the best that it’s been during his three-year tenure.

“The depth, it’s there now,” Roberts said. “When I got here, there wasn’t a lot of depth. There was some good talent, just not a lot of depth, a lot of areas that needed to be built up. We got that. Now we need our big hitters within those groups to come out and hit big at conference. Then, we need out those other people who can squeal onto the final to not be content, but to understand that, hey, if I can contribute one, two, or three points and we can multiply that by 10, 15, 20, with some big hitters in there, we got a chance to be a championship program.”

The men’s team is in year four since returning in the 2022-2023 season and has continued to climb its way up to the caliber of winning Sun Belt Conference Championships. Cross Country head coach Caleb Bowen says that it’s been incredible to see the strides the team has made in only a few years.

“We had two really good classes recruiting and it takes times, takes a lot of reps, takes a lot of experience to get to where they need to be, but they’re finally getting that now,” Bowen said. “So, really cool to see them all grow all across the board. Throwers, sprinters, jumpers, distance runners; They’ve all started to gain that confidence level. So, it’s been cool, I mean, six years ago before we brought men’s track, I never thought I’d be in this position where we had men, racing in this time of year.”

Marshall Track & Field is back in action this weekend as it competes in its first road meet of the season in Louisville, Ky. with the Bellarmine Classic.

Marshall Track & Field Recap By Ben Anderson, FM88 Sports Director Jan. 17, 2026 HUNTINGTON, W.
