Va. (WMUL-FM) — Marshall Track & Field finished with eight top-5 performances and eight top-8 finishes in its second straight meet in Louisville, Ky. at the Lenny Lyles Invitational over the weekend.

Leading the way in the field events was graduate student Cam Hamby, setting a second-best all-time mark in the men’s triple jump with a 15.31m jump. Hamby said that he was impressed with the team’s performance against top competition.

“I think the competition was great,” Hamby said. “I think it was one of the hardest competitions we’re going to face until upcoming conference (Indoor Championships) and maybe even outdoor. It was good to see how people did against the competition and people who thrived up against it.”

Running the way for the cross-country team was fifth-year student Max Sowers, racing a program second all-time best in the men’s mile with a PR of 4:11.72. Cross Country head coach Caleb Bowen said that Sowers has quickly built himself into one of the leaders of the team.

“I think the biggest thing he brings is positivity,” Bowen said. “Like every day in practice and since he got here, he’s been positive, a good role model, leading by example. But, as a grad transfer, you don’t want to step on anybody’s toes because you’re a new person, but you’re an older, experienced person. So, he really took that role on well, and he runs hard every day. He crushes it in practice, and the guys want to emulate that.”

The Thundering Herd at the meet received the “Golden Bullet” which goes to the team with the best energy. Director of Track & Field Keith Roberts said that team’s spirit is a crucial factor in the foundation that he is building with the program.

“I still think track at this level is a team sport,” Roberts said. “There’s nothing individual about it. It’s pure team. All that matters at the end of the day is the team score. It shows that we understand that. It shows that we understand that your teammates’ support and encouragement and just their presence alone can really help you be a better athlete on the track.”

Marshall Track & Field returns to action this weekend with the Marshall Jewel City Invitational for the final home meet of the season.

Marshall Track & Field Recap By Ben Anderson, FM88 Sports’ Director Feb. 6, 2026 HUNTINGTON, W.
