HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (WMUL-FM) \u2014 The Marshall Baseball Team picked up a big conference series win against the Old Dominion Monarchs this past weekend<\/p>\n
Marshall came in at 14-17 after losing nine of its last ten games, desperately needing to get back on track as the season continued.<\/p>\n
Game one would be all Marshall. The Southpaw Bryce Blevins would take the bump on Friday and would have a career outing. Blevins would go 8 \u2153 innings, giving up just one earned run, seven strikeouts, and a career high of 124 pitches, earning his sixth win on the year.<\/p>\n
It was a strong offensive showing for The Herd bats. AJ Havrilla had a 2-for-3 day at the dish with four RBI, as well as hitting his sixth homer of the season, now tied for the team lead. Evan Bottone, Tyler Kamerer, Jackson Halter and Oliver Service also had multi-hit efforts.<\/p>\n
Game 2 would not produce the same result. Marshall was only able to muster four hits and one run as the Herd fell short, 4-1.<\/p>\n
Drew Harlow had another quality start, going 6 \u2153 innings and giving up three runs, two of which were earned.<\/p>\n
The main story of this game would be the fourth inning. The Monarchs played small ball and took advantage of defensive mishaps to take a 3-0 lead, a lead that Marshall was not able to claw back from, as ODU excelled pitching-wise.<\/p>\n
That would set up the rubber match for Game 3, as Marshall was able to fight to a hard-earned 7-5 win to pick up the series win.<\/p>\n
Marshall would jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but it wouldn’t be smooth sailing as the Monarchs were able to get to Kenyon Collins in the second and third to get out to a 5-3 lead.<\/p>\n
The Herd wouldn’t waiver. In the fourth, Marshall would get a run across with 3 straight singles from Jack Smith, Evan Bottone and Tyler Kamerer.<\/p>\n
In the next frame, Marshall would regain the lead. Jackson Golden roped a double that scored Oliver Service, and Evan Bottone would beat a groundball out later in the inning to put Marshall up 6-5. Cleary Simpson would add one more run later to put the score at 7-5.<\/p>\n
Marshall needed a good bullpen day after Collins struggled through four innings, and the Herd got just that.<\/p>\n
Charlie Krebs would be phenomenal in his four innings of work. He only allowed two hits, punched out three batters and earned the win for the contest. Davis Gunn would get the save in the 9th for the first of his collegiate career on only six pitches.<\/p>\n
After the series, Marshall moves to 16-18 on the year and 8-7 in conference play. The Herd travels to South Alabama this weekend to take on the Jaguars.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
