{"id":4845,"date":"2026-05-21T12:00:42","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T16:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/?p=4845"},"modified":"2026-05-22T12:44:29","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T16:44:29","slug":"severe-storms-roll-through-west-virginia-with-more-rain-to-come-emilys-weather-corner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/2026\/05\/21\/severe-storms-roll-through-west-virginia-with-more-rain-to-come-emilys-weather-corner\/","title":{"rendered":"Severe Storms Roll Through West Virginia with More Rain to Come | Emily&#8217;s Weather Corner"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Emily&#8217;s Weather Corner<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Emily Grady<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Thursday, May 21, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s2\">Severe storms rolled through central West Virginia on the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/IMG_2237-scaled.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-4846\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/IMG_2237-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/IMG_2237-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wmul\/files\/IMG_2237-1024x768.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> afternoon of May 20<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">2026, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">dropping quarter sized hail and gusty winds<\/span><span class=\"s2\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s2\">The storms <\/span><span class=\"s2\">came in <\/span><span class=\"s2\">early<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> in comparison to when preliminary forecasts had placed them, garner<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ing a severe thunderstorm watch from the Storm Prediction Center, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">who<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> had previously placed the a<\/span><span class=\"s2\">rea under a slight risk for severe storms in the daily outloo<\/span><span class=\"s2\">k ea<\/span><span class=\"s2\">rlier in the day. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">The earliness of the storms <\/span><span class=\"s2\">was in<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> tandem with the dismissals of schools and some workplaces. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">The most severe cells <\/span><span class=\"s2\">tracked through Ca<\/span><span class=\"s2\">bell, southern <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Putnam<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, Kanawha, and <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Clay<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> counties, before weakening. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s2\">The<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> storms came through in waves, one after the other, across roughly the same paths. T<\/span><span class=\"s2\">he first of the cells even <\/span><span class=\"s2\">strengthen<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ed<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> to <\/span><span class=\"s2\">warra<\/span><span class=\"s2\">nt<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> a tornado warning shortly after crossing into <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Kanawha County<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> a<\/span><span class=\"s2\">fter becoming an \u2018elevated supercell\u2019, or a t<\/span><span class=\"s2\">ype of strong, rotating thunderstorm that<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> sits on top of stable surface air, feeding off of that <\/span><span class=\"s2\">air rather than warm air from the ground.<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">It is unconfirmed if a tornado <\/span><span class=\"s2\">was produced<\/span> <span class=\"s2\">from the storm at this time. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">Storm <\/span><span class=\"s2\">damages <\/span><span class=\"s2\">reported to the National Weather Service<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, however, <\/span><span class=\"s2\">were minimal<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, wit<\/span><span class=\"s2\">h the only reports being trees down on power li<\/span><span class=\"s2\">nes\u2014 specifically, one in Poca, which blocked a school bus from <\/span><span class=\"s2\">getting to its route. However, there were several reports<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> within the tracks of these <\/span><span class=\"s2\">storms of hail ranging from qua<\/span><span class=\"s2\">rter to half-dollar sizes. <\/span><span class=\"s2\">No damage to vehicles was reported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s2\">Rain continues <\/span><span class=\"s2\">through much of the area for the <\/span><span class=\"s2\">rest<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> of the week<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> into next week, with thunderstorm chances returning for this weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s2\">T<\/span><span class=\"s2\">he forecast for the rest of the week places today wit<\/span><span class=\"s2\">h a high of 60 and low of 56, Friday with a high of 68 and low of 60<\/span><span class=\"s2\">,<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> Saturday<\/span><span class=\"s2\"> with a high of 75, low of 61<\/span><span class=\"s2\">, and Sunday with a high of 79, low of 62. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s2\">For more information or to report further storm damage, please visit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/rlx\"><span class=\"s7\">https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/rlx<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emily&#8217;s Weather Corner Emily Grady Thursday, May 21, 2026 Severe storms rolled through central West Virginia on the afternoon of May 20, 2026, dropping quarter sized hail and gusty winds.
