SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WMUL-FM) \u2014 In the fifth battle of the Patriots, George Washington reigned supreme over Parkersburg South 6-1 in the first round of the WVSSAC State Softball Class AAAA Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe executed early,\u201d George Washington head coach Bub Hobbs said. \u201cWe were able to score some runs early in the game. Defensively, energy. I\u2019m pleased. To have a young, relatively younger group like we have, to have the poise that they did was pretty impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n
George Washington, a team that is not known for strong starts, fired on all cylinders at the plate, scoring four runs in the first three innings.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can pull any of the girls aside and they\u2019ll tell you what my thing is, energy,\u201d Hobbs said. \u201cIf you have good energy, that stuff spreads like wildfire. It always does. I told my girls, if we come out flat, that\u2019s how we\u2019re going to play. And we\u2019ve never been able to start fast because our energy\u2019s been bad. Today I told them, what a better time to start fast for the first time all year and have energy in the state tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n
Parkersburg South added its only run on the board when Payton Mackey blasted a single to shortstop on a 2-0 pitch to score Mia Archer. George Washington added one more run in the bottom of the frame to set the final score.<\/p>\n
Kynzi Bellamy picked up the win in the circle for George Washington going 6.2 IP, and giving up just three hits, one run which was earned, and 12 strikeouts to counteract two walks given up.<\/p>\n
George Washington now moves onto the winner\u2019s bracket where it will have to play in two games tomorrow, which is something that coach Hobbs said that the team has to approach with the proper mindset.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think a lot of it\u2019s just going to be the mental approach,\u201d Hobbs said. \u201cWe just have to continue to stay behind each other. We made a couple of mistakes, blundered nerves, it is what it is. Then we were able to shut it down. That\u2019s just what the kid\u2019s done all year. I mean, just energy and poise, and that’s hard to teach. I mean, that’s hard to teach.\u201d<\/p>\n
With the win, George Washington improved to 27-5, and will take on the winner of University\/Washington tomorrow while Parkersburg South fell to 19-9 with the loss and will play the loser of University\/Washington tomorrow in the loser\u2019s bracket.<\/p>\n
