Va. (WMUL-FM) — The Marshall Thundering Herd women’s soccer team came into yesterday’s contest after a rough defeat at the hands of the High Point Panthers. Marshall (2-1) hosted Wright State (2-1) at Hoops Family Field in Huntington on Sunday, and to the dismay of Herd fans began with a first half goal from the visiting Raiders who took a one nothing lead in the 14th minute.

The goal was set up following a stellar save on a Wiktoria Mikrut free kick by keeper Leigha Lauer. The lone goal of the first half came at the feet of Alea Cook, who took a shot on the left side of the pitch just outside of the penalty area after a beautiful pass by Taliah Pellizzari. Despite going down early the Herd fought back and outshot the Raiders in the first half five to two, while also being awarded a stretch of three straight corner kicks. However, the Herd was unable to capitalize on its chances as it was plagued by first half fouls; including a yellow card issued to Mikrut in the 26th minute.

The Herd clawed its way back to level however, being awarded a penalty in the 39th minute which was converted by Mikrut. The Herd came out in the second half attacking early and often, being awarded its fourth corner of the contest which Marshall would capitalize on scoring a goal in the 49th minute via a Maria Chaves header assisted by Lea Misch. Marshall continued to press forward seeing multiple chances result in missed shots and an offsides call on a wide-open Luana Gusmao.

An amazing save by Emma Durand on a 66th minute corner attempt by Wright State helped preserve Marshall’s lead. Wright State applied pressure late in the contest leading to a second yellow against the Herd on defender Holly Tickle in the 72nd minute, just one minute after the Raiders Pellizzari was issued a yellow.

A wonderful tackle by Marshall’s Madison Townes prevented a possible Wright State shot as the Raiders had a great run with the numbers advantage. Townes would help to seal the win just minutes later as she put a cross into the box that found Geovanna Souza for a goal that made the contest three to one in favor of the Herd.

Durand kept Wright State scoreless in the second half of play with a wonderful save, her second of the night, on a Chloe Dunford shot attempt. Durand would concede her second goal in the game in the 89th minute of the contest on a penalty kick from Wright States Caitlin Burger, but it was for naught as the Herd held on for its second win of the season.

Trailing early put the Herd in a tough spot, but according to Townes, the penalty near the end of the first half helped put Marshall back in the mix; “It really, really helped. We needed that momentum; I think the energy kind of went down a little bit. We were a little, like, flat. And once she got that, we were, like, all energy, all hands on deck, we knew what we had to do”. The win for Marshall is certainly a boost before the Herd has to hit the road for a stretch of two contests, the first being a trip to Belmont this Thursday.

Marshall Women’s Soccer By Rhys Owens, Traffic Director Aug. 24, 2026 HUNTINGTON, W.
