(WMUL-FM) — Marshall Women’s Soccer (6-2-3, 2-0-1 SBC) is set to protect its undefeated conference record against the Georgia Southern Eagles (7-2-2, 2-1-0 SBC) Sunday at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex in Huntington. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.

Marshall head coach Rafa Simoes’ third season leading the Herd is off to a hot start after an impressive 2025 campaign that saw the program post its most wins in a decade with eight. Georgia Southern head coach Chris Adams is in his sixth year with the Eagles, boasting a career record of 239-138-46 over 24 seasons.

In seven matches dating back to 1998, the Eagles lead the series 4-2-1. The last time the two sides squared off was last season, a 1-1 draw in Statesboro. Free-kick goals from both sides constituted the scoring in the defensive-minded contest. The last time the teams squared off in Huntington was an early October matchup in 2024, when Georgia Southern pulled away with a 1-0 victory.

Marshall last saw action in a daring 2-1 win over James Madison University last Sunday at home. The Dukes were voted the preseason favorites by Sun Belt Conference coaches but fell to the Herd for the first time since the schools joined the SBC in 2022. Geovanna Souza and Maria Chaves scored set-piece goals early in the contest, and defensive support secured the win for Marshall.

Georgia Southern heads to Huntington after a dominant 4-1 victory against Coastal Carolina. Kaitlin Cook, Anna Braziunas, and Emma Chapman contributed open-play goals, and midfielder Lauren Connelly finished off the day for the Eagles with a successful penalty shot.

The duo of sophomore forwards Wiktoria Mikrut and Geovanna Souza leads the Herd attack, combining for eight goals, seven assists, and 23 points this season. Mikrut posted a hat trick earlier in the year that helped earn her SBC Offensive Player of the Week honors. Souza’s four assists lead a Marshall side tied for the conference lead with 24 team assists

and put her third in the conference individually. Junior defender Maria Chaves adds three goals on a blistering 75% shooting percentage.

Senior forward Addison Comer leads the charge for Georgia Southern, contributing an SBC-best six assists and scoring three goals. Alongside Comer, midfielders Kendall Wilson and Meredith Pugh have totaled three goals on the year. Senior goalkeeper Quinn Wilson defends the net for the Eagles, posting a staggering 86% save rate, good for the top rate in the conference.

Fans can catch the action on ESPN+, or tune into WMUL-FM’s coverage of the contest, beginning with the pregame show at 12:45 p.m. Ethan Peltier and Zach Kraft will be on the call, and Owen James will provide live coverage on WMUL’s official X account.

Marshall Women’s Soccer Preview By Owen James, Training Coordinator HUNTINGTON, W.Va.
