{"id":2,"date":"2020-01-24T15:39:24","date_gmt":"2020-01-24T15:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/?page_id=2"},"modified":"2022-03-29T11:24:54","modified_gmt":"2022-03-29T15:24:54","slug":"sample-page","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/","title":{"rendered":"West Virginia Innovation &amp; Business Model Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>2022 WVIBMC&#8217;s Top Award &#8211; Congratulations to Anna Cummings!<\/h2>\n<p>March 28, 2022 | Huntington, WV<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-310 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/files\/2022\/03\/20220328_153726-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/files\/2022\/03\/20220328_153726-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/files\/2022\/03\/20220328_153726-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anna Cummings<\/strong>, an Entrepreneurship\/Innovation + Management double major from West Virginia University, claimed the top award ($3,000.00) from the WV Innovation + Business Model Competition (WVIBMC) state finals hosted on the campus of Marshall University.\u00a0 Anna&#8217;s new venture is named <em>Earring BackTrack<\/em> and is a device that allows an individual to easily remove and\/or apply the stainless-steel backs to an earring stem once inserted through the piercing.\u00a0 With the oldest population, West Virginians suffer from significant rates of arthritis and related dexterity issues.\u00a0 However, many individuals benefit from the <em>Earring BackTrack<\/em>, including children and those with smaller hands.<\/p>\n<p>As the top award winner, Anna may use the award for securing services, equipment, and\/or materials that will assist her in the furtherance of <em>Earring BackTrack<\/em> as a new venture.\u00a0 Congratulations to Anna for an outstanding concept, presentation, and all the work into making the device a reality.\u00a0 Anna is coached by <strong>Anne Jones<\/strong> (Director Entrepreneurship, StartUp WV +\u00a0Business Advisor, Morris L. Hayhurst LaunchLab) and <strong>Dr. Carrie White<\/strong>, Ed.D. (Exec. Director LaunchLab).<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-313 alignleft\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Derek Hess<\/strong>, <strong>Elizabeth Harvey<\/strong>, and <strong>Taylor Pugh<\/strong> from West Virginia Wesleyan College claimed the second position award ($2,000.00) for their new venture concept named <em>Incubation Productions<\/em>, a startup focused on drawing video production and filmmaking to the State of West Virginia.\u00a0 The team observed that the costs of producing video content (creator-side) and the costs of securing video content (user-side) have been a discouragement to both sides of the equation.\u00a0 <em>Incubation Productions<\/em> intends to close this gap with affordable creation and content that small businesses and small organizations can effectively utilize.\u00a0 Derek, Elizabeth, and Taylor are coached by <strong>Dr. Tracie Dodson<\/strong> and <strong>Dr. Josh Beck<\/strong>, business faculty at WV Wesleyan College.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-312 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/files\/2022\/03\/20220328_153829-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Marshawn Kelley<\/strong>, <strong>Marcus Kelley<\/strong>, <strong>Trenton Holcomb<\/strong>, and <strong>Jonathan Williams<\/strong> from Glenville State University were awarded the third position ($1,000.00) for their new concept named SCups, a new venture trying to address safety and security in public settings in which beverages are vulnerable to alterations.\u00a0 In particular, the SCup is a restaurant-style beverage container that has a lid that sends a signal when it is removed without authorization.\u00a0 The container uses processors and circuits to create the security that is accuated when the lid is removed.\u00a0 This helps prevent individuals from ingesting doped or poisoned drinks, with the alert serving to warn the user and to replace the beverage.\u00a0 Marshawn, Marcus, Trenton, and Jonathan are coached by <strong>Dr. Mark Sarver<\/strong>, business faculty at Glenville State University.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-314 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/files\/2022\/03\/20220328_154048-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/files\/2022\/03\/20220328_154048-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/files\/2022\/03\/20220328_154048-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Ellie Hawcroft<\/strong> from Concord University was awarded $750.00 for her proposed new venture named <em>NutriKick<\/em>, a food and beverage alternative that provides healthy choices in areas where food and beverage choices are limited to fast food and chain restaurants.\u00a0 In particular, <em>NutriKick<\/em> would target students and faculty members in the smaller college towns where on-campus and off-campus food and beverage offerings are quite limited in both selection and operating hours.\u00a0 The target markets include those that work or practice beyond traditional operating hours, vegetarian and vegan consumers that experience restricted options and menus, and those that seek gluten-free alternatives to the traditional fare available in cafeterias and similar outlets.\u00a0 Ellie is coached by <strong>Dr. Angela Addair<\/strong>, business faculty at Concord University.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Katelyn Spears<\/strong> and <strong>Sydney Adkins<\/strong> from Marshall University were awarded $750.00 for their proposed new venture named <em>Wildflower Homes<\/em>, a startup intending to offer a new rental option to young adults by operating tiny homes.\u00a0 While most young adults rent apartments or mobile homes, neither option is optimal.\u00a0 Apartments usually include roommates and\/or neighbors that may be difficult to live with or next to, while mobile homes are aesthetically unappealing and may carry a stigma.\u00a0 Instead, a tiny home (500-700 square feet) can offer an aesthetically pleasing look without the crowded nature of apartment-living.\u00a0 Moreover, tiny homes may be customized and multi-level living options may be utilized to provide sufficient floorplan alternatives that would attract a number of potential target customers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-316 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/files\/2022\/03\/20220328_153953-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" The fourth edition of the competition sees a return to an in-person presentation format.\u00a0 WVIBMC is open to all students enrolled in a two- or four-year institution in the state of West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-244 size-medium alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/files\/2022\/01\/842-300x212.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/files\/2022\/01\/842-300x212.png 300w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/files\/2022\/01\/842-1024x723.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.marshall.edu\/wvinnovates\/files\/2022\/01\/842.png 1240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>WVIBMC focuses on helping college students in West Virginia find a significant problem that they can apply their skills and strengths to solve. WVIBMC utilizes design thinking as inspired by institutions like IDEO and Intuit&#8217;s Design-4-Delight (D4D) to test assumptions and experiment with possibilities to develop game-changing solutions and business models for and with real customers.
