Provide quality assistance and increase opportunities to University inventors and investors in the commercialization of ideas.       Expand Tech Transfer education available to Marshall students, faculty, and the general public.       Expand the flow of external funding to Marshall for research leading to new commercial products and services.       Establish Marshall University as a primary engine for fostering high tech economic development in the region.

Because of Marshall’s commitment to the economic development of the region, the University established the Technology Transfer Office.  The TTO’s primary focus is to make the unique products and services generated by our faculty, staff, and students available to the public for commercialization.

 Extending beyond the typical technology transfer programs on other campuses, the TTO works with regional economic development partners to create high-tech, high paying jobs in West Virginia.  The TTO’s first goal is to see that the new enterprises growing out of Marshall stay here.

A significant number of new high-tech businesses grow out of research universities and subsequently locate nearby.  Marshall’s primary opportunities for regional technology-based economic development reside in the following research assets and its regional partners.

State-of-the-art facilities—Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Science Center, Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center and Forensic Science Center

• Advanced technologies—imaging, genomics, computing, animal care, tissue culture, etc.

• Major basic and applied DNA-based research in medical (cardiovascular, cancer, and infectious diseases), environmental (water quality), and forensic (human and microbial) areas of emphasis

• Regional medical center and a unique patient population provide significant opportunities for clinical trials

• Transportation-related research—Nick J. Rahall, II Appalachian Transportation Institute provides GIS mapping, GPS, and intermodal transportation research

• Business analysis—Center for Business and Economic Research provides feasibility studies and market analysis.

• Local angel investors and venture capital

• High-tech park and business incubator under development
