 Marshall
University is experiencing a significant increase in research
activity. Starting in 1990, our total grant and contract funding
has doubled every five years. While this rate of growth will
be difficult to maintain, it does reflect growing university
emphasis and the breadth of resident expertise.
The
benefits of our research are boundless. It offers new learning
opportunities for our faculty and students and multiple services
to the greater community. For example, Marshall has research
projects in every county in West Virginia. Marshall research
creates jobs technical, administrative and student
stipends. In 2004, our grants and contracts employed over
600 people making the Marshall University Research Corporation
one of the top ten employers in Huntington.
Marshall
research is playing an ever increasing role in regional economic
development. With the creation of the Technology Transfer
Office, http://www.marshall.edu/tto/,
many researchers brought forth invention disclosures
some with significant commercial potential. In this new knowledge-based
economy with its unique emphasis on intellectual capital and
R&D, more and more small businesses either grow out of
research universities or locate nearby to take advantage of
the talents and technologies available on campus.
Research
goals of Marshall University are:
- Provide
solutions to regional and national educational, socioeconomic,
and health problems
- Increase
number of faculty and students engaged in research
- Increase
nationally competitive funding
- Strengthen
research support and administration
