Welcome from the Geography Faculty and Staff

The Geography faculty and staff would like to welcome you to the department’s website. Geography is a rapidly expanding discipline with great career opportunities ranging across the environmental sciences, social sciences, and technological fields in both the public and private sectors. Students in Geography at Marshall work closely with faculty and other students in a friendly learning environment as they develop the valuable knowledge and practical skills needed to launch new careers or advance existing ones.

In addition to regular classroom instruction, students work directly with the latest geospatial technologies as they gain new skills and use them to address important fields like urban planning, environmental management, weather forecasting, disaster response, economic development, homeland security, and a range of international issues. Beyond the regular coursework, students have opportunities to pursue internships and independent study courses that allow them to focus their skills and apply them in a workplace environment. At the end of their studies, students work with faculty to design and implement their own research projects, either as a Capstone course for undergraduates or a research project for graduate students. The department’s program also provides a solid foundation for students wishing to continue in graduate programs at other universities.

Students in Geography at Marshall enjoy the opportunities to interact with faculty and other students in our close-knit department. You will gain valuable knowledge and job skills in a congenial learning environment. Internships and independent studies are available for students to apply and develop their geographic skills to real-life problem solving. Undergraduates and graduate students may qualify for assistantships which include stipends and tuition waivers.

Many geography majors secure professional employment or enrollment in advanced degree programs before graduation! Stick with us for a fulfilling career! Check out our Careers and Jobs page for alumni with real jobs.
