[PSC 480 – Special Topics] Disaster Management Policy
This course will introduce the student to the field of disaster management policy. It is an exploration of the foundations of the intergovernmental system of disaster preparedness and mitigation. It begins with how we understand federalism and the policy process. Students will become familiar with the institutional changes and practical implementation of this complex policy.

Disaster Management is a discipline dealing with the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of disaster related activities with the disaster related activities with the help of disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness plans.

In this seminar, we will examine recent scandals and controversies in memoir that have rocked the genre of creative nonfiction, testing its boundaries and the reader-writer contract—an implicit understanding that the writer of nonfiction is telling the truth. We’ll look at select “false memoirs” and other works that provoke difficult questions and, often, strong reactions in the reader. Along the way, students will compose their own purposefully “twisted” nonfiction writing, exploring their own relationship to the truth in a post-truth era.

[HON 480-204] Eating Identity
While still a young field of studies, Food Studies offers students a discipline that is at once grounded in academic theories of recognition, cultural anthropology, political activism, race and ethnic studies, and postcolonialism while also engaging the interdisciplinary fields of philosophy, history, literature, film, anthropology, and culinary studies. In this class, we will explore food as symbolic markers of identity; the ethics of eating; the production and consumption of food in media such as cookbooks and television shows; and the creation of fusion dishes as markers of new global pathways that allow us to expand from the local to the global.
