Tax Benefits for Higher Education
The American Opportunity (formerly Hope) and Lifetime Learning tax credits that may be available to you if you pay higher education costs. To assist you in claiming these credits, Marshall University will file form 1098-T with the Internal Revenue Service by January 31 each year. This information in no way represents tax advice from the University, as it is the responsibility of the taxpayer to determine eligibility for the credit. Please do not contact Marshall University regarding your eligibility for this credit.

What is a Form 1098-T (Tuition Statement)?
The IRS requires the University to issue Form 1098-T, Tuition Payments Statement, to each student by January 31. The form 1098-T is an information tax document to aid taxpayers in determing whether they are eligible to claim a tax deduction or one of the education tax credits. The Form 1098-T is NOT to be filed with a tax return. Its purpose is not to report scholarship income to the IRS. It is for information purposes only.
How To Obtain a Copy of Your 1098-T Form
Marshall University will mail the 1098-T forms by January 31st each year. If you did not receive your copy or need an additional copy, simply log into CA$Htrack. Once logged in, 1098-T information is accessible in the bottom, right-hand corner. Select the desired tax year and click on ‘Submit’. You may then print the form from your web browser to assist you in your tax preparation.
(please note that the 1098-T will contain ONLY transactions occurring from January 1 – December 31 in the given tax year)
Why are my qualified payments not listed in Box 1?
According to IRS guidelines, higher education institutions must choose to report either (Box 1) payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses or (Box 2) amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses. Marshall has chosen to report (Box 2) amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses.
What is included in Box 2, amounts billed for qualified tuition and related expenses?
Box 2 includes tuition and mandatory fees that were billed between January 1 and December 31.
Why was I excluded from receiving a 1098-T?
Marshall University is not required to issue a 1098-T to students whose qualified tuition and related expenses are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships or grants (when Box 5 is equal to or greater than Box 2).
