We invite members of the Marshall University community to nominate candidates for an honorary degree.
What is a honorary degree? It is a prestigious accolade awarded by universities to individuals who have made significant contributions to society, culture, or a specific field, without the recipient having completed the standard requirements for the degree. These degrees are often conferred during commencement ceremonies and serve as a recognition of exceptional achievement, leadership, or innovation that aligns with the university’s values and mission. We are specifically interested in nominees who can demonstrate:
- Significant contributions to societal well-being
- Embodiment of the ideals of scholarship and service
- Record of distinguished leadership accomplishments
- Commitment to promoting diversity, equity and inclusion
- Ability to inspire graduates and strengthen Marshall University ties
- Adherence to the highest ethical standards.
Unlike traditional degrees, which are earned through a prescribed course of study, honorary degrees are a symbolic gesture, honoring a person’s lifetime accomplishments and impact. The recipients of honorary degrees are typically distinguished figures, such as scholars, artists, philanthropists, business leaders, public servants, or other luminaries whose work has had a profound and positive influence on the world or the local community. The awarding of an honorary degree is not only a tribute to the individual but also serves to inspire the graduating class and the university community by showcasing exemplary models of success and virtue.
Nominations for Spring 2026 commencement must be submitted by October 1, 2025, at 11:59pm ET.
Nominations received after this date will be rolled to the next cycle.
