Biography
As Academic Affairs Fellow for AI in Education, Dr. Wiley promotes and supports the effective and ethical use of artificial intelligence in service of the University’s Mission and Vision.
Dr. Wiley completed his BFA in Music at Marshall in 1997. From 1997 – 1998 he was the university’s first webmaster and inaugural chair of the Electronic Publishing Oversight Committee, which set intellectual property, course load, and other policies pertaining to online courses. He earned a PhD in Instructional Psychology and Technology from Brigham Young University in 2000, followed by an NSF grant-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship at Utah State University from 2000 – 2001. Dr. Wiley then held tenure track faculty positions in graduate programs in educational technology at Utah State University (2001 – 2008) and Brigham Young University (2008 – 2012). In 2013, Dr. Wiley cofounded Lumen Learning and served as its Chief Academic Officer from 2013 – 2025. He returned to Marshall in 2025 as Term Associate Professor of Management Information Systems. He also serves as Dean of the WV Governor’s School of Entrepreneurship and Director of the Brad D. Smith Student Incubator.
Dr. Wiley has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles and received more than $10 million dollars in external research funding. He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER grant and has held appointments as Nonresident Fellow in the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School, OLNet Expert Fellow at the Open University in the UK, and Visting Scholar at the Open University of the Netherlands. His teaching and research combine generative AI, open education, entrepreneurship, and professional development with the goal of making education more meaningful, relevant, and affordable. He is one of the founders of the open educational resources movement.
