Exercise Science Major

Bachelor of Science in Health & Movement Science

Exercise Science is a scientific field of study that focuses on the anatomical, biomechanical, biochemical, and physiological aspects with application to exercise.

Marshall University’s Exercise Science program includes instruction in Basic Science, Basic and Clinical Exercise Physiology, Biochemistry in Exercise, Biomechanics, Fitness Assessment and Exercise Prescription, Nutrition, Strength and Conditioning, and internship.

Marshall University Undergraduate Exercise Science students are well-prepared for certifications in exercise. Those certifications are:

–  The ACSM offers certifications in the following areas: Certified Personal Trainer® (CPT), Certified Health Fitness Specialist SM (HFS), Certified Clinical Exercise Specialist (CES) and Certified Group Exercise Instructor SM (GEI).

– The NSCA offers certifications for a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)

In addition, students focus on one of two areas of emphases: Applied Exercise Physiology and Clinical Exercise Physiology. Applied Exercise Physiology Emphasis is for students who seek their careers as exercise and fitness specialists, while Clinical Exercise Physiology Emphasis is for students who seek postgraduate degrees in health and medical fields. Students and their advisors will select suitable courses for their own career goals.

Prospective students must meet the minimum criteria listed below to be considered for admission to the program:

  • Admission to Marshall University
  • Declared Exercise Science as a major, including preferred area of emphasis if applicable

Master of Science in Exercise Physiology

The Master of Science degree in Exercise Physiology is a broad based program designed to prepare individuals for careers as exercise specialists in the following areas:

  • Hospital based preventive and rehabilitative programs for cardiac, pulmonary and diabetes patients
  • Sport performance and enhancement programs for athletes of all sports at all levels
  • Weight loss centers/programs
  • General and corporate wellness programs
  • Strength coaching
  • University/industry research laboratories

Also, many graduates continue studies in professional programs in medicine, physical/occupational therapy and physician assistants programs.

At Marshall University, graduate students have the opportunity to be involved in applied and basic research using the most sophisticated equipment available for laboratory investigations in the field of exercise physiology.

The MS in Health and Movement Sciences is recognized as a STEM-designated degree program by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. As such, eligible F-1 international students who complete this program may qualify to apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, provided they meet all federal regulatory requirements.
