
HerdWork Humanities Internship Program

Are you ready to put your humanities education to work in the real world—and get paid
for it?
The HerdWork Humanities Internship Program at Marshall University is funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation and is your chance to gain professional experience, make a meaningful impact in Appalachian communities and explore career paths that align with your passions.
$2,000–$4,000 stipends for 12-week placements (equivalent to
$16.67 per hour)
From research and content creation to event planning and community outreach with mission-driven nonprofits in our area
From distinguished faculty and nonprofit leaders
Fulfill your major requirements while building your resume

- Humanities major (60+ credit hours, 2.75+ GPA, see eligible majors below)
- Enroll in a 1-credit online course: HerdWork 490
- Passion for leadership, effective communication, and community impact
Eligible majors include: Art History, Communication Studies, History, French, Humanities (Classics, Latin, Religious Studies, Philosophy), Japanese, Literary Studies, Music History, Spanish, and English (students majoring in Creative Writing, Professional Writing, or English Education are not eligible)

- The program will continue for at least the next 4 years. So, if you’re not eligible or ready for Fall 2025, you can apply later.
- The type of internship will vary. Some may be 100% in-person, some may be remote/virtual and some may be a hybrid. These specifics will be known before any matches are made between student interns and organizations.
- You must be an enrolled student at Marshall during your internship.
