Biography
Dr. Simpson received his PhD in Philosophy at the University of Georgia. His research is based on the belief that addressing the problems of the 21st century requires not only bringing together the sciences and the humanities, but also rethinking materiality, the environment, what it means to be human, and philosophy. His research engages issues within Environmental Philosophy, Social Epistemology, and Philosophy of Technology by drawing on Science and Technology Studies, New Materialisms, and Indigenous Philosophy.
He has published on: (1) detours as a response to the contingency of human life, (2) the positive virtues of a good listener in eventful conversations, (3) the onto-epistemic virtue of open-ended curiosity as a way to understand nonhumans, (4) the possibility of committing epistemic injustice against nonhumans, (5) ethically comparing the landrace rice, Carolina Gold, with the genetically modified Golden rice based on the criteria of multispecies flourishing and biocultural diversity, (6) deriving an environmental ethic based on flower and song in Aztec philosophy, and (7) the need to pay attention to surprising nonhumans through playful world-traveling and improvisation dance.
