Meeting the Moment at New Heights
The sky is no longer the limit at Marshall University. We’re making sure the friendly skies are staffed with a reliable workforce with aircraft and rotocraft pilot training, aviation maintenance technician training, unmanned aircraft training, FAA dispatcher training, and careers in aviation management. Our aviation programs are connecting West Virginians to high-impact careers, driving economic growth in Appalachia. Aviation is one of our six pillars — areas where our university is uniquely positioned to lead and impact our region, our country and our world.
It ties directly into our strategic commitment to:
- Fuel economic growth in West Virginia
- Provide a 100% placement rate for graduates
- Provide a distinct value proposition
Why this is Important
The projected demand for jobs in the aviation industry is soaring — in the next 20 years, the world will need 602,000 new pilots, 610,000 technicians and 899,000 cabin crewmembers.
The United States advanced air mobility market, which includes flying taxis and cargo drones, is expected to generate $115 billion annually by 2035.
By 2038, there will be an estimated shortage of 61,000 helicopter pilots worldwide. The industry supports careers with life-changing pathways, with the possibility to remain in Appalachia.
