Biography

Master Sergeant Christopher Varner currently serves as a Senior Instructor in the Department of Military Science at Marshall University, where he is responsible for the education, mentorship, and professional development of ROTC cadets. In this role, he supports leadership training, curriculum development, and commissioning preparation.

MSG Varner enlisted in the United States Army in 2005. His military education includes the Warrior Leadership Course, Advanced Leader Course, Senior Leader Course, Master Leaders Course, Basic Recruiter Course, Advanced individual Training Platoon Sergeant Course, Master Fitness Trainer Course, Master Resilience trainer course, Military Mountaineer Course, and Rappel Master Course.

Throughout his career, MSG Varner has served in a wide range of leadership positions, including squad leader, platoon sergeant, Vietnam Investigation Leader,  First Sergeant, and Acting Battalion Sergeant Major . His operational experience includes Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Investigations for the Vietnam Conflict.

His notable awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Nolton Award, Combat Action Badge, and Military Mountaineer Badge.

MSG Varner remains committed to developing disciplined, ethical, and adaptive leaders of character and continues to serve both the U.S. Army and the academic community.
