Tips for Parents

Summer Empowerment Academy

Parents play a crucial role in supporting their students during the transition to college, especially when participating in a program like the University College Summer Empowerment Academy.

Here are some ways you can provide support:

Before the Program

  • Encourage Participation – Help your student understand the benefits of the program and encourage them to take full advantage of the opportunity.
  • Prepare Together – Assist with packing and preparing them for the program. Discuss what to expect and help them set realistic goals.

During the Program

  • Stay Connected – Keep in touch through regular phone calls or messages to provide emotional support and encouragement.
  • Promote Independence – Encourage your student to solve problems on their own and make use of the resources available on campus.
  • Be Positive – Offer positive reinforcement and celebrate their achievements, no matter how small.

After the Program

  • Discuss Experiences – Talk about what they learned and how they felt during the program. This can help reinforce their confidence and readiness for the upcoming semester.
  • Continue Support – Keep providing emotional and practical support as they transition into the regular academic year. Encourage them to stay connected with the friends and mentors they met during the program.

General Tips

  • Listen Actively – Be a good listener and provide a safe space for your student to express their concerns and feelings.
  • Encourage Resource Use – Remind them to use campus resources like Tutoring Services, the Writing Center, counseling services and academic advisors (who will be a part of their Academy team).
  • Stay Informed – Keep yourself informed about the program and college’s resources so you can offer relevant advice and support.

By being supportive and encouraging, parents can help their students build confidence and develop the skills they need to succeed in their first college semester and beyond.
