Project Overview

War Comes Home brings together Marshall University theater students and military veterans from the community to co-create and produce an original immersive theater production under the guidance of artists from award-winning Third Rail Projects (TRP). TRP is a New York-based theater company that creates site-specific, immersive, and experiential performances in collaboration with the communities and cultural landscapes in which they present their work.

Immersive theater is a genre in which audience members are actively present in the work itself. Our audiences will thus be able to experientially connect with veterans’ stories. Participants in our program will incorporate prose, poetry, choreography, theatrical staging, sound design, video media, and set design to develop a platform for sharing these stories.

Project Goals

  • Foster compassion, awareness,  mutual understanding, and strength of community through sharing veteran stories
  • Provide a distinctive, powerful medium through which community members and veterans can build mutual understanding
  • Build self-confidence, a sense of purpose, and self-understanding for veterans
  • Provide an impactful means for engaging West Virginians with veterans in their state and for connecting veterans to each other
  • Provide educational and artistic opportunities for people in the region
