Community at Marshall is everything, but we get it — meeting new people can feel overwhelming (and let’s be honest, sometimes a little terrifying). Here are some easy ways to connect with like-minded students, and maybe even discover a new hobby or passion along the way!
- Join student organizations/clubs: Marshall has over 250 clubs and organizations, plus 17 sororities and fraternities, so basically, there’s a group for everyone. Whether you’re into academics, sports, hobbies or just want to meet others with similar interests, you can find your people. A few examples? Anthropology Club, Cyber Team, Craft Club, Game Design Club, Garden Club, International Student Organization — and honestly, the list goes on. You’ll definitely find a spot that feels like home.
- Attend campus events: Just show up! There’s always something happening around campus, whether it’s a concert, cultural event or guest lecture.
Even if you go alone, it’s an easy way to find people who are into the same stuff as you. - Volunteer: Helping out in the community while meeting new people? Total win-win. Jump into a service project or a student leadership program. It’s an easy way to meet others while making a positive impact.
- Connect through classes and study groups: Team up with classmates for a study group. You could improve your grades and even make some new friends while you’re at it.
- Talk to your resident advisor (RA): If you live in a residence hall, your RA is an awesome resource. They can help you meet new people and point you toward clubs, events or groups that match your interests.
- Leave your door open: We mean it — literally! If you live in a dorm, leaving your door open when you’re home gives off welcoming vibes. You never know who might stop by to say hi.
