Safety Technology

1. Why did you choose Safety Technology as your major?
I chose Safety Technology as my major because it is an ever-growing field that provides for a lasting and rewarding career. Marshall University’s Safety program is also accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). This means that the education provided through the program meets high standards of applied science, computing, engineering, and technology.

2. When did you decide you wanted to pursue that major?
I decided to pursue Safety after I was in a rut and hit a speed bump in proceeding with a degree in Microbiology. I was not happy with what I was pursuing and classes didn’t grab my attention. After I had switched majors to Safety Technology and took safety classes, I knew that it was the perfect fit for me.

3. What influenced your decision?
I owe where I am now to a friend, Chris, that experienced a similar situation. He had switched majors to Safety, graduated, and now works in Houston, Texas with a job in corporate safety management. He encouraged me to switch my major to Safety Technology, telling me of the great opportunities available in the field.

4. Why did you choose to attend Marshall University?
I chose Marshall University because of their science programs. I have always loved the sciences and wanted to make it a part of my eventual career. The Safety Technology program encompasses a multi-dimensional education in which the student learns everything from physics and chemistry to management and policy.

5. What has been your favorite Safety Technology class as a student and why?
It is difficult for me to choose a favorite Safety Technology class because all the classes provide an inviting environment that have caring professors that want you to succeed. The knowledge gained from lectures and labs makes me very confident about joining the workforce after graduation.

6. What do you plan to do after graduation?
After graduating, the opportunities for a Safety Technology major seem endless. I would like to work oversees or for the Environmental Protection Agency focusing on the interaction between man and the environment, and eventually become a Certified Safety Professional.
