Named after Arthur Weisberg, a regional business leader and major benefactor of Marshall who passed away in 2012, the 152,000 square foot facility is located on Third Avenue next to to the Robert C. Byrd Biotechnology Center. All undergraduate and graduate engineering and computer sciences programs are housed within the WAEC, providing students with a modern, collaborative environment for learning and innovation.
The public is invited to join members of the Weisberg family, along with Marshall University President Brad D. Smith and engineering faculty and staff, for the special event which will be held at in the atrium of the WAEC.
“The addition of this wonderful facility 10 years ago has been a fantastic boon to the College of Engineering and Computer Sciences, said David Dampier, dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Sciences. “The classrooms, laboratories and offices available in the WAEC have enabled a massive growth in enrollment, retention and graduation rates, as well as a more than 10-fold increase in annual research expenditures by the college. If it were not for the Weisberg family and their generosity and support, the college would never have been where we are today and looking at tremendous growth continuing into the foreseeable future.”
The WAEC was the first building on the Huntington campus to have LEED certification, an important designation recognizing green buildings, providing environmental and social benefits. The facility features laboratory functions with traditional wet bench biological sciences, dry technology development laboratories and applied engineering laboratories such as high-bay advanced materials testing, as well as traditional classrooms and offices. It also serves as the home of the Marshall University Research Corporation.
The anniversary event will include special remarks from members of the Weisberg family, Smith and others.
