Marshall Psychology Clinic offers free therapy group to help students manage perfectionism

Share
The Marshall University Psychology Clinic is offering a free, eight-week therapy group this fall to support college students struggling with perfectionism — a common challenge that can impact both academic performance and personal well-being.

The group, open to all college students, provides a supportive environment to explore the pressures of perfectionism and learn practical tools to build self-compassion. Sessions will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, beginning Oct. 16 at the Marshall University Psychology Clinic, located in Room 449 of Harris Hall.

Perfectionism often goes beyond simply wanting to do well. It involves setting unrealistically high standards, being overly self-critical, and feeling that one’s worth depends on flawless achievement. While the desire to excel can be motivating, perfectionism can lead to stress, anxiety, and burnout — especially for college students balancing academics, relationships and life transitions.

“College can bring on added pressure for students who already identify as perfectionists,” said Katelyn Smallman, one of the group facilitators. “This group will help you learn tools to combat perfectionism and take with you for the rest of your college career.”

Mallory Stanley is the co-facilitator for the group.

“Joining a group is a great way to find others with similar experiences and get exposure to different viewpoints,” she said. “Many students discover they’re not alone in these struggles.”

Participants will learn evidence-based strategies to manage self-criticism, develop healthier perspectives on success and failure, and practice self-kindness — skills that can foster resilience and balance throughout college and beyond.

The group is free to attend and open to all college students.
