A closing reception will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30. It will be preceded by an artist talk from 5-6 p.m. in Room 209 of the Visual Arts Center. The public is invited to attend both events, and the events and exhibition are free and open to all.
“Found and Fabricated” brings together a contrasting collection of sculptures, installations and prints that explore the relationship between labor and play. Through the use of both natural and fabricated materials, as well as industrial and domestic objects, Cabaca and Davis investigate how form and function can describe the parallels between craftsmanship and industry.
“Found and Fabricated is a really contemporary take on repurposing materials we usually associate with industrial use that makes us appreciate the ways craftsmanship can turn them into artwork,” said Gallery Director Sophia Celdrán. “Molly and Asha’s pieces in this show motivate us to reconsider our relationship to materials, like concrete, and the labor that goes into creating something out of nothing, whether that’s a sculpture in a gallery or a bridge over a river.”
Originally from Ontario, Canada, Asha Cabaca is a multimedia sculptor currently based in Morgantown, West Virginia. Her practice blends natural forms, industrial aesthetics and elements of absurdist literature to create evocative, mixed-media structures.
Cabaca teaches Interior Architecture at West Virginia University and works as a studio assistant to sculptors Alison Helm and Jamie Lester. Her outdoor works are featured in several sculpture parks, including Cary Hill Sculpture Park in Salem, New York, Sculpture Trails Outdoor Museum in Solsberry, Indiana, and WNC Sculpture Center in Lenoir, North Carolina.
Molly Davis is a sculptor and printmaker from Fairmont, West Virginia, who examines everyday objects and materials through sculpture, installation and prints. With a background in graphic design and art education, Davis earned her MFA in sculpture from West Virginia University in 2023. Her work has been exhibited both regionally and nationally, and she received an honorable mention in the International Sculpture Center’s 2023 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Awards. Now based in Morgantown, Davis is an active member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, serves on the Arts Council of Greater Morgantown, and helps coordinate community arts programming including Downtown Morgantown’s First Friday for the Arts and the ART LAB exhibition and performance space.
Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and admission is free and open to all. For more information or inquiries, contact Celdrán at galleries@marshall.edu.
