Marshall University will host the seventh Alys Smith Symposium on Women Professionals at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the Shawkey Dining Room of the Memorial Student Center. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

The symposium will feature a keynote address by Melanie Hall, president and CEO of Hospice of Huntington. After the keynote, a panel of local women professionals in the health care field will include a physician, two registered nurses, a radiation physicist and a physician assistant.

Hilary Brewster is the director of the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program.

“I cannot believe we are hosting our seventh symposium already,” Brewster said. “These events have become informational and networking resources for students and the community alike. I’ve seen internships develop out of casual conversations. Everyone is welcome — students thinking about a career in the medical field, maybe someone in the community considering a career pivot. Learning from experts is a key component to consider when choosing a professional path.”

The Alys Smith Symposium is sponsored by the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program and the Office of the President. It celebrates and highlights the achievements and contributions of women in various professional fields.

“Health care is a key component of our society, and these women are contributing to our health and wellness in varied, important ways,” Brewster said. “I am especially interested to hear Hall’s keynote address. Hospice might be the closest thing we have to angels on earth.”
