Share
Marshall University will host the annual Charlotte Schmidlapp Lecture at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the Shawkey Dining Room of the Memorial Student Center.

This year, Dr. Bernadette Barton, professor of Sociology and the director of Gender Studies at Morehead State University, will present a talk titled, “The Pornification of America: How Raunch Culture is Ruining Society.”

Dr. Barton’s research and teaching explore issues of gender, sexuality, religion, culture, happiness and the sex industry. Barton is co-editor of Sex Work Today: Erotic Labor in the 21st Century, and author of The Pornification of America: How Raunch Culture is Ruining Our Society.”

Dr. Hilary Brewster is the Director of the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program at Marshall.

“I am so grateful to one of Dr. Barton’s former students, Alissa Rookard, who is the coordinator for the Women’s Center here on campus, for putting Dr. Barton on my radar as a speaker,” Brewster said. “Hosting Dr. Barton is a testament to the interesting feminist scholarship and activism that is centered here, in Appalachia, at one of our peer institutions. I’m thrilled to be making these connections!”

The lecture is free and open to the public, with a reception to follow.

The Charlotte Schmidlapp Lecture Series, sponsored by the Schmidlapp family and Fifth Third Bank, is dedicated to amplifying women’s voices in academia and beyond. It brings distinguished scholars and speakers to Marshall University to engage the community in meaningful discussions on gender, history, and culture.  For more information, please contact Dr. Hilary Brewster at brewsterh@marshall.edu.
