Alys Smith Symposium on Women Professionals features Lakan Sheets, Institute for Cybersecurity

Marshall University will host the eighth Alys Smith Symposium on Women Professionals at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 9, 2026, in the Drinko Library Atrium. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.

The symposium will feature a keynote address by Lakan Sheets, Partnership and Engagement Lead at the Institute for Cybersecurity. After the keynote, a panel of local women professionals in the Cybersecurity field will speak and answer questions

Dr. Hilary Brewster is the director of the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program.

“The topic of cybersecurity is a new and exciting venture, and Alys specifically requested we focus on it for this symposium. Our panel is comprised of some incredibly successful women who are breaking barriers in this incredible field,” Brewster said.

The Alys Smith Symposium is sponsored by the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program and the Office of the President. It celebrates and highlights the achievements and contributions of women in various professional fields.

“Marshall’s Institute for Cybersecurity has been doing some really fascinating work, and we are excited to showcase not only Lakan’s expertise, but the expertise of graduates as well. This will definitely be an event you don’t want to miss if you are interested in cybersecurity, and it is welcome to women and men, as always!” Brewster said.
