Young is an associate professor within the Department of Social Work. She earned her master’s degree in social work from West Virginia University and her doctoral degree from Marshall University. She has previously served as the program director of the Bachelor of Social Work program, providing leadership in program development and initiatives related to accreditation, student success and academic excellence.
Scott Davis, interim dean of the College of Health Professions, expressed his enthusiasm for Young’s appointment.
“Dr. Young has demonstrated outstanding leadership, dedication to our students and a deep commitment to the social work profession,” Davis said. “I am excited to see the Department of Social Work continue to thrive under her leadership.”
Davis also expressed appreciation for the contributions of the department’s current chair, Peggy Proudfoot-Harman.
“I want to sincerely thank Dr. Proudfoot-Harman for her many years of dedicated service and leadership,” Davis said. “Her commitment to the department, our students and the community has left a lasting impact, and we are grateful for all she has contributed to Marshall University. Dr. Proudfoot-Harman chose to step down as the chair but will continue as a professor in the Department of Social Work.”
This announcement follows the appointment of Shikeal Harris as the Master’s of Social Work (MSW) program director at the conclusion of the spring 2026 semester. Harris brings a strong passion and experience for graduate social work education.
Together, Young and Harris bring a wealth of experience, leadership and commitment to social work education at Marshall. Their complementary strengths create a strong leadership team that is well-positioned to guide the Department of Social Work as it continues to advance its mission of preparing skilled, ethical and compassionate social work professionals.
