The DOJ funding will support the MUFSC’s capacity to generate SNP DNA profiles to support forensic investigative genetic genealogy (FIGG) testing in West Virginia.
FIGG uses the SNP DNA data and genealogy research to try to help identify unknown individuals in unsolved forensic cases.
The grant was supported by U.S. Sen. Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia.
“The Marshall University Forensic Science Center has established itself as a leader in our state and around the world,” Capito said. “I know the impact that their work has on our criminal justice system and in support of victims of crime and law enforcement. This allocation will help support the Forensic Genomic Institute project and will allow the center to better educate the databases they are supplying.”
Marshall University President Brad D. Smith expressed his gratitude for Capito’s advocacy in helping Marshall secure the funding.
“Marshall University is deeply grateful to Senator Capito for her steadfast support of our nationally recognized Forensic Science Program and her commitment to advancing innovation in higher education,” Smith said. “Her leadership has empowered Marshall to expand our capabilities in genetic technology, providing students with cutting-edge opportunities while strengthening the scientific and workforce needs of West Virginia and the nation.”
Jason Chute, executive director of the MUFSC, said this grant will build on the more than 25-year legacy of the center.
“This funding helps us further that mission by building out the Forensic Genomic Institute and putting the latest tools in forensic science, such as forensic genetic genealogy, to work. That means serving as a testing resource, a training resource, and educating the next generation of forensic scientists on this technology,” Chute said. “Ultimately, behind every unsolved case is a family waiting, and this technology helps bring them closer to answers. We are grateful to Senator Capito for her continued support and for championing this work.”
