Marshall University Etiquette Dinner aims to help students build confidence at the professional table

Marshall University students will have the opportunity to build confidence in professional dining, networking and communication during the Office of Career Education’s Etiquette Dinner from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Don Morris Room of the Memorial Student Center.

Sponsored by Alcon, the interactive event will give students an opportunity to participate in a multi-course meal while learning and practicing skills they may use during interviews, conferences, networking events and business meetings.

“Professional dining can feel intimidating when you don’t know what to expect,” said Jennifer Brown, assistant director for student engagement and marketing in Marshall University’s Office of Career Education. “The goal of the Etiquette Dinner isn’t to memorize a long list of rules. It’s to help students feel comfortable enough that when they find themselves having lunch with a recruiter, attending a conference dinner or meeting a future supervisor over a meal, they can focus on the conversation instead of worrying about whether they’re doing something wrong.”

Throughout the evening, students will receive practical guidance on professional introductions and conversation, place settings and utensils, dining do’s and don’ts and strategies for handling common situations that may arise during professional meals.

The event is open to students at all stages of their college experience. Developing professional etiquette early can help students feel more prepared for internships, interviews, networking opportunities and other professional experiences throughout college.

The Etiquette Dinner is part of the Office of Career Education’s ongoing efforts to help Marshall students develop career-readiness skills that extend beyond the classroom and prepare them to successfully navigate professional environments.
