The seminar will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Shawkey Dining Room, located in the Memorial Student Center on Marshall’s Huntington campus, and is sponsored by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. Students, health care professionals and community members will discuss maternal mental health risk factors, disparities and opportunities to improve support for mothers and families.
“Maternal mental health deserves greater attention in West Virginia, where rural isolation, limited access to care, and socioeconomic challenges can make it difficult for mothers to receive timely support,” said Dr. Sumaira Khalid, assistant professor in Marshall’s College of Health Professions.
Guest speakers from the West Virginia chapter of Postpartum Support International will share insights on maternal mental health, while Marshall University Master of Public Health students will present projects examining risk factors, community needs, gaps in services and health education.
Student research posters and educational materials will also be on display.
“Through this seminar, we hope to raise awareness, highlight local needs and gaps, and connect students, healthcare professionals, and community partners,” Khalid said. “Most importantly, we want attendees to leave with a better understanding of how public health approaches, including epidemiology, community needs assessment, and health education, can help improve maternal mental health outcomes across West Virginia.”
The event is free and open to Marshall students, faculty and staff, with no registration required. A complimentary grab-and-go lunch and free gifts will be provided.
