National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. Community members can drop off unwanted medications at the following locations in Huntington:
- Quick Response Team (QRT) Office: 1133 20th St.
- EMS Station 6: 1766 Washington Ave.
- Huntington Police Department Headquarters: 675 10th St.
National Prescription Drug Take Back Day helps prevent medication misuse and theft by providing an opportunity to safely dispose of expired, unused and unwanted medications. The service is free and anonymous, and no questions will be asked.
Collection sites cannot accept personal care items, needles or sharps, liquid injectables, illegal drugs, thermometers or other mercury-containing items, hydrogen peroxide or inhalers.
During the previous National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in April 2026, Americans turned in 321 tons of prescription drugs at 4,417 sites operated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), with support from 4,306 state and local law enforcement partners. Overall, the DEA and its partners have collected more than 17.3 million pounds of unused medications through Take Back Day events.
The initiative addresses an important public safety and public health concern. Medications left unused can be susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. Prescription drug misuse can also contribute to accidental poisonings and overdoses.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Survey on Drug Use and Health has consistently found that many people who misuse prescription medications obtain them from family members or friends, including medications taken from home medicine cabinets. Proper disposal of unused medications helps reduce access to these potentially dangerous drugs. Flushing medications down the toilet or throwing them in the trash may also pose environmental or safety concerns, depending on the medication.
