Marshall University is awarding $4.5 million in emergency relief money to eligible students this semester, thanks to a COVID aid package approved by Congress in December.

The Huntington Regional Chamber of Commerce recognized its many volunteers and committees at its annual Volunteer event Friday, Jan. 29. Switching from a luncheon to an online event, this event gave Chamber leadership and staff the opportunity to recognize some of its many dedicated volunteers. This year’s Volunteer of the Year award went to Dr. Jerome A. “Jerry” Gilbert, the president of Marshall University.

Marshall University’s Society of Physics Students will continue its Faces of Physics Speaker Series with a virtual presentation by Dr. Abel Méndez in February, with additional monthly speakers on deck for March and April.

The path to medical school is different for every student. For Danny M. Phillips, M.D., that journey started in 1972 with the Marion County Rescue Squad, and was solidified from 1973 to 1976 during his service in the U.S. Army. Now, he and his wife, Sandy, are giving back to the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine with a new endowed scholarship for veterans and first responders.

For the third year in a row, Marshall University’s Lewis College of Business, home of the Brad D. Smith Schools of Business, has been named among the nation’s most outstanding business schools, according to The Princeton Review®. The education services company, headquartered in New York City, profiled Marshall as one of 244 outstanding on-campus M.B.A. programs for its “Best Business Schools for 2021” list.

Marshall University has joined the ‘zero waste’ movement with a new, campus-wide commitment to becoming plastic-free. Marshall University President Jerome Gilbert recently signed the ‘Break Free from Plastic Campus Pledge,’ which is a campus-wide commitment to eliminate all single-use disposable plastics. The pledge specifically addresses accessibility and inclusivity concerns and generates a framework for college

Through their 2020 fundraising efforts, Marshall University’s Mid-Ohio Valley Alumni Chapter made a $30,000 gift to the Marshall University Foundation.

Marshall Health has expanded its outpatient surgery options, including, but not limited to, ear, nose and throat, ophthalmology and orthopaedics, to Three Gables Surgery Center, an ambulatory surgery center managed by St. Mary’s Medical Center (SMMC), a member of Mountain Health Network.

Students can apply now for two undergraduate biomedical research internship opportunities at the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.

The Marshall University School of Art and Design will open new exhibits this month with the start of the spring semester. “Trace Elements” will be on view from Tuesday, Jan. 19, through  Friday, Feb. 19, in the Birke Art Gallery in Smith Hall on Marshall’s Huntington campus. Meanwhile, the 10th Annual National Juried Exhibition will be on view Jan. 19-Feb. 12, in the Charles W. and Norma C. Carroll Gallery in the Visual Arts Center in downtown Huntington. Both will have virtual receptions and artist talks available to all online and offer in-person viewings at the galleries, though viewings may be limited or subject to change because of COVID-19.
