On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Marshall University Information Technology (MUIT) will implement a modification to the university’s password standard for new passwords and password changes within the marshall.edu domain. This standard enhances our security posture and aligns with current best practices to protect university data. This change was endorsed through our collaborative shared governance process, following ITP-1 guidelines.
Current faculty, staff, and students will NOT be asked to update their passwords at this time. However, you will be contacted over the next several months to update your password in compliance with the new requirements. Please refer to the “What to Expect” section for information on when you will be requested to update your password.
Updated Password Requirements:

Minimum length: 12 characters

Must include at least three of the following:

Uppercase letter
-
Lowercase letter
-
Number
-
Special character
-
-
Must be unique and different from any previously used password
-
Last 500 passwords will be remembered (previous passwords cannot be reused)

Account lockout: 10 minutes after five consecutive failed login attempts
-
No maximum password age (passwords will not expire unless changed by the user)
What to Expect:
The update on May 13th will not affect current passwords—only future password changes by the user. However, starting in May 2025, MUIT will begin a phased approach in requesting users to update their MUNET password to meet this standard. The timeline for phased password updates is as follows:

June 3rd, 2025 – All Alumni Accounts & All Non-Faculty Employees (including MURC & MU Foundation)

Fall Semester 2025

September 2025 – All Faculty and fourth-year students
-
October 2025 – second- and third-year students
-
November 2025 – first-year and graduate students

December 2025 – Remainder of population
MUIT will send a reminder email to each group 30 days before it begins to request password changes. Additionally, users who set their password after May 13th, 2025, will NOT be asked to update their password again through this process.
