Biography
David Wiley is an associate professor at Marshall University and serves as the university’s Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer. As one of the founders of the open education movement, his teaching, research and consulting happen at the intersection of generative AI, open education, entrepreneurship, instructional design and student success. He also serves as dean of the West Virginia Governor’s School for Entrepreneurship and director of the Brad D. Smith Student Incubator.
Wiley has received a number of recognitions for his work, including a National Science Foundation CAREER grant and appointments as a Nonresident Fellow in the Center for Internet and Society at Stanford Law School, and a Peery Social Entrepreneurship Research Fellow in the Brigham Young University Marriott School of Business. As a social entrepreneur, he has founded or co-founded numerous entities, including Lumen Learning, Degreed and Mountain Heights Academy, and was named both an Ashoka Fellow and a Shuttleworth Fellow. In 2009, Fast Company named him one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business. He was Education Fellow at Creative Commons from 2013-16 and one of the original authors of the CC Certificate Program, as well as president of the international Association for Educational Communications and Technology from 2022-23.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in music from Marshall University and a doctorate in instructional psychology and technology from Brigham Young University.
