AI Transformation Fellows

Decades ago, there was no internet. Teaching and learning were limited to specific times and places. You had to be in the classroom to give a lecture or an exam. You had to be in the library to pull a book or journal off the shelf. Then the internet became publicly available. An entirely new “online” modality of teaching and learning emerged. The research process was transformed by the availability of online databases and digitized articles and books. Suddenly, teaching and learning could happen in any place and at any time. The internet democratized access to higher education.

Just a few years ago, there was no generative AI. Now it, too, has become publicly available. And like the internet, generative AI is transforming the academy. But – critically – phrases like “the internet democratized access to higher education” and “generative AI is transforming the academy” misattribute the forces behind these changes. People used the internet to democratize access to higher education. And people will use generative AI to transform the academy. We are Marshall, and we are those people.

The AI Transformation Fellows program provides faculty with time, space, tools, and a community with which to think about the ways people are using AI to transform our disciplines, the world of work outside the academy, and society more broadly. As we consider how employment and society are changing, we explore how we can more effectively prepare our students to thrive in these evolving environments. And we dramatically expand our ideas about what’s possible as we each work to reimagine and reinvent a single course – maximizing the potential benefits of generative AI for student learning while minimizing its potential risks to student learning.
