Program Overview

Engineering is defined as the application of science and mathematics by which the properties of matter and the sources of energy in nature are made useful to people.

The Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) at Marshall University prepares students to thrive by teaching critical thinking, complex problem-solving and how to apply technical expertise.

Our graduates enter the workforce ready to apply engineering design to produce solutions with the consideration of public health, safety and welfare, as well as social, environmental, cultural and global factors.  Students who complete the degree program will take 126-129 credit hours, depending on their Area of Emphasis.

Students can select to focus on one of two Areas of Emphasis:

Program Highlights
Foundation Courses

The curriculum includes rigorous coursework in calculus, physics, chemistry, and statistics, ensuring students develop a solid analytical and scientific base essential for engineering problem-solving.

Hands-On Learning

Courses like Fluid Mechanics Laboratory, Circuits and Instrumentation, and Capstone Senior Design provide practical, project-based experiences that prepare students for real-world engineering challenges.

Career Prep

Courses such as Engineering Career Preparation and Intro to Project Management equip students with essential professional skills, including leadership, budgeting, and strategic planning.

Career Opportunities

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, careers in architecture and engineering are projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2023 to 2033. The median annual wage for architecture and engineering occupations was $97,310 in May 2024. Graduates of the program can also continue their education to complete their master’s degrees in specific engineering fields.
