Program Overview
Graphic Design students at Marshall University are immersed in creating visual solutions for their communities and their clients, from the tiniest details to the biggest ideas. In a supportive studio environment, you will explore the ever-widening reaches of the industry, working on a wide range of projects that combine artistic and strategic communication skills across traditional print design, experimental digital experiences and everything in between.
The curriculum covers typography, color theory, logo design, branding, editorial design, packaging, advertising, social media, motion design, UX/UI, website design and more. You will also gain hands-on expertise in industry-standard tools including Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, WordPress and other platforms. Beyond technical skills, the program develops your abilities in concept development, problem-solving, collaboration, project management and visual analysis.
A standout feature of the program is Collective 37, a student-run, faculty-led design agency that functions as both a class and a small business. A collaboration between the School of Art and Design and the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, Collective 37 gives students the opportunity to serve real clients on campus, in the Huntington area and across the state. Working in the agency, you will build portfolio material and leadership skills while practicing client management and professional teamwork.
Students also complete an apprenticeship with a campus department, the student-run agency or a local business, ensuring you enter the workforce with genuine real-world experience. Your senior year culminates in Capstone Studio and Graphic Design Portfolio, where your work will be reviewed by industry professionals to prepare you to enter the workforce.
