Program Overview

A degree in Management Information Systems from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia may be just the right fit for you. Management Information Systems or MIS is the study of people, technology, organizations, and the relationships among them. MIS professionals help firms realize maximum benefit from investment in personnel, equipment, and business processes. MIS is a people-oriented field with an emphasis on service through technology.

If you have an interest in technology and have the desire to use technology to improve people’s lives, a degree in MIS may be for you. MIS professionals create information systems for data management (i.e., storing, searching, and analyzing data). In addition, they manage various information systems to meet the needs of managers, staff and customers.

Students majoring in MIS study how companies and individuals can use systems and the generated data in decision-making processes. Students majoring in MIS gain a knowledge of:

  • Business technology
  • Management techniques
  • Organizational development

Students will gain the ability to manage the information systems that businesses use for processing and retrieving internal business information. This major differs from information technology and computer science because there is more of a focus on people and service through technology.
